Design Mistakes to Leave in 2024

The new year is prime time for design predictions and blossoming new ideas. Out with the old, in with the new! And speaking of old, there are definitely a couple of design trends that are best not brought into the new year. To help inspire your new-year-new-design inspiration, here are Crimson’s recommendations for the trends to avoid in the new year!

  • White Everywhere

White is a great base for design and brings brightness to any space, but the overuse of white in your designs can present an overwhelming or cold environment. Instead of focusing on white for brightness, try experimenting with bright bold colors you love! Colors, and various textures or materials, add warmth and style to your space. Our excellent team of designers specialize in creating a space true to you no matter what colors speak to you. Check out some of our vibrant designs in our portfolio.

  • Lack of Functionality

Imagine – you have created the perfect, aesthetically pleasing space. It is exactly as you dreamt. But now that you are living within the space, you realize it is not suited for your lifestyle. A practical environment is something that you never want to sacrifice in your space. We believe that function should be at the forefront of a design. The better a space flows and aligns with daily use, the more you will come to enjoy your space as time goes on!

  • Uninspired Hallways and Entryways

Hallways and entryways are spaces often overlooked by the human eye, but these spaces are fundamental in representing the rest of your space. Blank or drab entryways significantly diminish your space’s possibilities. An intricate hall or entry is the perfect opportunity to introduce guests to your design. These spaces are best applied with storage spaces, such as built-in shelving, or light fixtures, such as a bright light fixture.

  • Static or Overly Formal Spaces

An overly formal space can cause your environment to feel too staged and disconnected. Alongside functionality, keeping a space cozy and warm is key to loving it! We recommend using fabrics and patterns that aren’t overly harsh or striking, as well as comfortable furnishings. Designing your space to accommodate how you want it to be used is the most important aspect of your design process.

  • Overlooking Textures

Texture brings out the best aspects of any design space. From woods, to various stones, and even fabrics, textures are vital in adding depth and richness to your space. Combining mixed textures adds dimension to your design, preventing a space from looking flat or one-dimensional. Our design team is outstanding in adding contrasting textures to a design space that seamlessly blends together.

  • Underestimating the Power of Plants

We know that the usage of plants and greenery in a space brings life to a space. Bringing outside nature indoors prevents a space from feeling sterile and lifeless, instead adding a sense of warmth and calmness. Plants are great to incorporate into your space for health benefits as well. It is recommended to have a plant at least every 100 square feet to improve the air quality of a space. Plants are also a great pop of color! Whether a vase of flowers, a cluster of succulents, or a large potted plant, plants are a must-have aspect of a design space.

  • Overuse of Trends

The hot new trends of each year are often enticing, promising a modern elevated design. Although new trends can be useful and great in a space, overusing them frequently causes a space to feel outdated quickly. We recommend using timeless design techniques and trends, incorporating trendy pieces and design elements in smaller, less prominent areas. All things considered, design trends change every year!

Brand new trends are always an exciting topic for the new year. New year, new trends! With this upcoming new year, it is important to reflect on the popular trends of the previous year to decide what you should bring into your new year. While many trends become timeless and sophisticated, there are still quite a few that tend to get old quick. This new year, take stock of what trends you want to bring into 2025 with our team!
