Our Favorite Unpopular Design Opinions

Design trends aren’t all they might be chalked up to be. Certain design styles might not be for everyone, but design opinions are widely debated. There are definitely some design opinions that we feel should be more popular. Controversial design opinions can be a great way to inspire new spaces and expand your inspiration or interests. Let’s dive into our favorite unpopular (and possibly controversial) design opinions!

Trendy Ages Fast – Timeless Over Viral

We all know of those trends that everyone becomes obsessed with, only for the next one to take over immediately after. Millennial grey and fast furniture, anyone? The truth is, trends are most often just trends. They’ll be over before you know it! That is why so many designers prefer timeless vibes in their designs. They are timeless to a T! Incorporating timeless pieces, styles, and art into a space can bring it out of the trap of trendy. Choosing timeless over trendy can also help you to save money, time, and a headache in the long run. Choosing quality pieces have never been a bad option!

Lighting Can Make or Break Your Space

Even the most beautiful spaces can be ruined with the wrong lighting. It’s true! Lighting can make or break your entire design. Ambience and mood lighting are great ways to bring in warmth and charm to your space. Once you add ambient lighting to a space, you’ll never want your overhead lighting on again! But some spaces just don’t match that vibe. When you design a space, you should consider the function of the room and its lighting requirements. You will likely want cooler lighting in a professional setting, while a bedroom would look best with warm lighting. Not only should lighting match the design, but it should also be functional!

Matching Furniture can Look Dated

It can be tempting to make absolutely everything in your space. We know what we like, and it can be hard to veer away from it at times. Too much of all matching can make your space feel sterile, and less like a home. Bring in more charm and character to your space by incorporating different styles of furniture. It can match your vibe and the overall look, but add more depth to your space. Try finding pieces you love and others that are similar, but sparkle a little differently.

Too Much Grey = No Personality

We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again, BYE MINIMALISM! A neutral vibe every now and then can bring a refreshing and relaxing vibe to a space. That said, too much grey is, well, too much! Bring warmth into your space with neutral colors that have a little more warmth and charm. Some great neutral colors that still pop include dusty greens, beige’s, and even light blues. Incorporating even the smallest details with color can completely transform your space. Keep in mind, your space will influence your mood – you don’t want to be influenced by a boring vibe!

Accent Walls Can Be Overdone

We all love an accent wall. Bringing a little touch of fun and a little sprinkle of sparkle into a space. But even an accent wall can be overdone. Either commit to the accent in the room overall, or don’t commit at all. Too many accent walls can make the rest of your space lack attention. Share the love and spread the accent colors, wallpaper, or whatever you choose into more of your space. Try an accent room even! This will truly spice up your design space and make even the loneliest corners shine.
