When our clients married and began dreaming of their new family, they decided to move from a high rise apartment in the city to a gated community. This young couple had a distinct vision and style in mind for their new home. Unfortunately, knotty pine and dark woods made the house feel weighty and old fashioned, rather than tailored and classically elegant. We began by brightening the kitchen with a white-on-white palette.
We placed a custom marble-topped, white island in the center of the room, beneath polished nickel lanterns. We painted the walls white, keeping the space fresh and clean. We brought a bit of warmth to the design by adding gold details to the kitchen with brushed gold hardware and fixtures. The house had beautiful bones, which was evident in the vaulted ceiling of the family room. Unfortunately this room also featured layers of knotty pine. Our simple solution was to paint this room white, as well! This room became the perfect space to relax and exhale after a long day. White on white became a theme throughout the home, except in the study. In this room, our clients wanted to subvert the expected and go with a black-on-black design. We drew inspiration from the masculine, chic designs of Ralph Lauren and painted the walls and ceilings with a high lacquer paint. We selected an ebony crystal chandelier, under which we placed a leather sofa and black and white chairs. Built-in bookcases and humidors make this room the perfect, masculine retreat.
